Costing over $18 million, Masjid Yusof Ishak is the 26th
mosque to be built under the Mosque Building and Mendaki Fund programmed. The
design and architecture of the mosque was inspired by President Ishak’s
official and private residences. Moreover, it blends traditional mosque
characteristics with the heritage of the “Malay world”, the
Nusantara. Unlike typical mosques, it doesn’t have huge pillars or dome. Having
instead, a very contemporary look and feel of a “Malay house”.
The prayer space is able to
accommodate 4,500 people with facilities to cater to the needs of the elderly.
Other facilities also include a multi-purpose hall, a conference room, a
sizeable auditorium, seminar rooms for teaching purposes and a roof terrace.
The mosque also has facilities to cater to the
needs of the elderly. The Mosque also houses the Rahmatan Lil Alamin (RLA) Foundation, located at level 4.
Approaching congregants will first identify the mosque
with its minaret as the landmark. Upon reaching, they are greeted by the Bab
which marks the entrance as a bridge between the mosque and the community. This
is further emphasized with a grand portal as a node to orientate people towards
Kiblah.
The site has a narrow frontage and has limited
infrastructure and access. Being the first development on a relatively white
site, basic infrastructure such as minor sewer line, telecom, electrical cables
and water pipe has to be coordinated with the Authorities, and built to serve
the site.
