Al-Azhar Great Mosque is a mosque located in Jalan Sisingamangaraja, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta. The mosque was constructed between 1953 and 1958. It was originally known simply as Mesjid Agung (Great Mosque). It was Jakarta’s largest mosque when it was built until it was surpassed by the Istiqlal Mosque which was completed in 1978. Friedrich Silaban, a Christian architect was appointed as the architect of this mosque in Jakarta.
The Mosque is topped with a white onion dome, following the architecture of mosques in the Middle East. The architecture of the Al Azhar Mosque shows an assimilation between the Hij’ Mosque in Saudi Arabia and the Qibtiyah Mosque in Egypt. The dome is decorated with calligraphy painting with the word Allah at the top and beautified with the 99 Asmaul Husna (names of Allah). It has one minaret. The choice of white colour that dominates the exterior of the building is solely intended to interpret the nature of purity and majesty in Islam. Meanwhile, to convey elegance as a place of worship, the main staircase of the mosque is made in tiers and is not like an ordinary building.
Al-Azhar Great mosque best known for its educational works. The mosque was established not just as a mosque but also as a centre of social activities and dakwah. It was among the first “modern” mosques of Indonesia in which a mosque building is completed with modern facilities such as an Islamic library, a lecture and a seminar hall, a health clinic, classes for both religious and secular subject, and dormitories. Al-Azhar Great mosque was designated as a cultural heritage in 2021
