En 1994, luego del levantamiento del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) en Chiapas, el español Aureliano Pérez —ahora Emir Nafia— llegó a San Cristóbal de las Casas a fundar una misión de la sección ortodoxa islámica El Murabitán. Emir Nafia buscaba convertir al Ejército Zapatista en un movimiento musulmán.
Sin embargo el Subcomandante Marcos, líder de los zapatistas, nunca aceptó reunirse con el español y el plan fracasó. Nafia decidió tratar de esparcir el Islam al resto de los indígenas tzeltales y tzotziles mediante una panadería instalada en el centro de San Cristóbal.
