Dr. Mostafa writes in his book, “A question that will inevitably be asked is how legitimate is it to search for spiritual significance in something as utilitarian as a building. The answer is that the use of analogy in its various forms in the Qur’ān and traditions of the Prophet ﷺ is a substantial part of the common Muslim intellectual heritage. … firstly that both sources of Islamic legality, namely the Qur’ān and Sunna, make ample use of analogy, representing unseen realities by means of concrete visible images, and secondly that the concrete images in question are to be found not only in nature but also in manmade artifacts. Finding spiritual meanings in God’s creation has always been recognised not only as justifiable but as a highly desirable pursuit.
