The idea of the project is rooted in the custom of Saudi Royalty to build small mosques which attached to their residences wherever they live. In Enfra suburb in 1979, a tiny mosque with a 400-person capacity was initially constructed next to the Prince’s vacation home. The Prince built a another, far larger mosque with a seating capacity of 5000 attached to the old mosque which was used to capacity. in 1982, the client and the architect both agreed on the concept of a religious and cultural complex, which was then expanded by experts into a plan for a religious, educational, and research centre with a concentration on the humanities in Islam. To generate income and sustain the facility, housing and communal facilities were added.
Arranged in four sets of aisles (Rwaks), the prayer space is organized around a central sahn running the entire height of the building, and linking the mosque space to the library above. The sahn is covered with a very large, traditional cupola. The corniche defined the main entrance to the mosque and the library. The ground level of the mosque forms the main prayer hall with the library facilities above.
