_Natuna Grand Mosque

Information

The Natuna Grand Mosque, also known as The Great Mosque of Natuna and Agung Natuna Mosque, is located in Natuna Regency, Indonesia. It was built in 2007 and completed in 2009. This mosque is called the Taj Mahal of Indonesia because the design of its dome is similar to the Taj Mahal dome in India. It is a fairly magnificent and spacious mosque. One row of rows in this mosque is enough to accommodate up to 180 worshipers.

The Natuna Grand Mosque has a very large interior space. The middle of the mosque is illuminated by natural light from the dome of the mosque. While on the edge of the room it look shadier because it is covered by the top floor of the mosque. This contrasting lighting difference in the interior of the mosque has the meaning of the Muslim worship journey towards a bright spot of the greatness of the Creator. The two main doors located on the left and right sides of the building facing the Qibla also direct the nuances of the space to focus on the source of Divine light.

The interior of the dome is decorated with calligraphy and floral designs. The Natuna Grand Mosque has 20 domes dominated by green and yellow colours and arranged in 3 levels. The design of the tiered domes is similar to the design of the Sulaimaniah Grand Mosque in Turkey where each level has a different philosophical meaning. At the highest level there is one main dome that is the largest symbolizing the nature of Ihsan, the highest level of faith. It is 17 meters high to symbolizes the number of rakaat of prayer in a day. At the level below there are 6 domes which are smaller than the main dome. These 6 domes symbolize the pillars of faith in the Islamic religion. At the lowest level there are 12 domes that surround the dome above. These symbolize the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. On its four sides there are four towers (minarets), which are interpreted as symbols of the four companions of the Prophet.

The plaza section of the mosque is very large in size, allowing it to be used as a place to hold large religious events.
