Al-Dwaihra Mosque, which is located in the Al-Bujairi neighborhood of Diriyah. The mosque’s history dates to the establishment of the first Saudi state. The mosque is distinguished by its distinct Najdi style, and it is currently in use and open for prayer.
The architectural style of the Al-Dwaihra mosque is one of simplicity and beauty. The
mosque’s primary building material is clay, and its minaret is in the mosque’s western wing. The mosque consists of three corridors parallel to the Qibla wall, the wall in a mosque facing Mecca, each with a mihrab, a niche architectural element that indicates the direction to Mecca, and an open courtyard located in the eastern part of the mosque for women, each with a mihrab. In addition, the minaret, which stands approximately 13.5 meters high, is located to the north of the mosque.
Because the Diriyah region is characterized by being hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, the traditional mosques in that region were distinguished by the architectural thought born of the environment in which they contained the element of seclusion, which are places underground to protect from the bitter cold, and therefore they were known as the winter prayer hall, as well as the raw materials, which were represented by mud bricks, due to their properties that are compatible with the climate.
As part of the historic Diriyah development program, Al-Dwaihra Mosque was restored and rehabilitated according to the scientific approach followed in the restoration of historical buildings, and it was provided with modern requirements and services, with the aim of preparing it for performing prayers and preserving its historical value. It was inaugurated in 2014.
